While performing hair transplant with traditional FUE over a decade and realising the practical bottlenecks which come in the way of smooth surgical execution, our surgeons started fewer modifications. One such modification is Direct Hair Transplant, which aims to reduce/ eliminate graft’s ‘out of body time’- which significantly increase the survivability and growth of transplanted grafts.
Understanding Direct Hair Transplant
Hair transplantation is a field of constant innovation. Hair Transplant surgeons across the globe are improvising the technique to make it minimally invasive with higher graft yield.
The introduction of FUE (Follicular Unit extraction) proved an edge over strip method due to the absence of a linear scar in the donor area which enabled patients to have buzzed or short hair at the back making it a more aesthetically attractive option. However, the inherent nature of FUE posed a challenge in terms of grafts trauma, while harvesting, storage and implantation. These three identified bottlenecks subjected our expert surgeon for the modification in traditional FUE resulting in a hair transplant Technique ‘Direct Hair Transplant’.
The steps involved in Direct Hair Transplant are:
Step 1. Slits creations- Recipient bald area is prepared for graft implantation with appropriate depth, direction and density.
Step 2. Grafts Harvesting and Implantations- Healthy grafts are cherry picked under magnification and harvested with the help of motorised punch. The harvested grafts are loaded in Implanters (SAVA, KEEP, CHOI) which are unloaded into pre-made slits (in step1).
Step 1 and step 2 are performed simultaneously.
