      What are Warts?

Warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), are common skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body. These non-cancerous, often rough-textured protrusions develop when the virus infects the top layer of the skin, resulting in rapid cell growth. Warts come in various forms, including common warts, plantar warts (on the soles of the feet), flat warts, and genital warts. While generally harmless, warts can be bothersome due to their appearance and, in some cases, may cause discomfort or pain. Understanding the nature of warts is crucial for effective management and successful treatment.

      Causes of Warts

HPV Infection: The human papillomavirus is the primary culprit behind the development of warts.
      ● Skin-to-Skin Contact: Warts are highly contagious and can spread through direct skin contact with an infected person or surface.
Weakened Immune System: Individuals with a compromised immune system may be more susceptible to developing warts.
      ● Some warts such as genital can be caused due to sexual contact.
      ● Use of public spaces like gym equipment, hot baths, and yoga mats can also lead to warts.

      Signs of Warts

      ● Raised Growth: Warts often present as raised, rough-surfaced growths on the skin.
      ● Variety of Shapes and Sizes: Warts can vary in appearance, from small and grainy to larger, more complex formations.
      ● Black Dots: Some warts may have small black dots, which are tiny blood vessels that supply them.

Treatment for Warts and its Preventive Measures

      ● Topical Medications: Prescription or over-the-counter creams and solutions to eliminate warts gradually. Salicylic acid-based gel or ointment helps gradually remove the wart tissues.
Blistering agents: They help elevate warts and remove them by forming blisters around them.
Bleomycin injections: It is used to remove warts. This kills the virus causing the warts.
      ● MMR Vaccine: Intralesional MMR vaccine is also a modality used for multiple warts. It helps by inducing antigens in the vaccine which do not specifically react against HPV resulting in the regression of warts. Successive sessions could be required for the same.
      ● Laser Therapy: Using targeted laser beams to break down wart tissue for a smoother skin surface.
Minor Surgery: Employing electrical needles or cryosurgery to excise and remove warts is one another method that can be implied and works effectively.

      Preventive Tips:
      • Maintain hygiene
      • It is contagious so avoid getting in touch with infected people.
      • Avoid biting nails
      • Avoid scratching or picking on warts.
It is always advisable to get in touch with an expert if you spot any such lesion for the right diagnosis and treatment plan.
