      What is a Fungal Infection?

Fungal infections encompass a diverse group of medical conditions caused by various types of fungi. These infections can manifest in different areas of the body, including the skin, nails, hair, or mucous membranes. It can also cause infections in the throat, mouth, lungs, urinary tract, and many other body parts, resulting in a spectrum of uncomfortable and, at times, debilitating symptoms. The world of fungal infections is vast, with an array of causative agents and clinical presentations, making it imperative to grasp the fundamentals of these infections for their effective management. Fungal infection is a contagious infection that is caused in humans when their bodies come in contact with fungus present in soil, animals, or any other infected person.

      Types of Fungal Infection

Identifying the type of fungal infection is important to provide the right and best treatment for the same. Here we are defining the most common types of fungal infection

      ● Tinea Pedis: It can occur between toes /soles and is characterized by skin peeling, itchiness, redness, burning, or flaking. In rare cases, blister formation can also happen resulting in dry/scaly feet. This happens due to fungus that survives in warm humid conditions like- public showers, swimming pool decks, or due to tight-fitted shoes or socks.
      ● Tinea mannum: This superficial infection can occur on the palms or interdigital folds of hands. People usually confuse this with eczema. This is characterized by thickened skin or itching along with a dry, scaling appearance. This occurs due to excess sweating and maceration.
      ● Tinea Corporis: This is a ring-shaped infection that is accompanied by itchy, red, or flaky skin.
      ● Tinea Cruris: This is a ring-shaped infection that affects majorly buttocks, inner thighs, or genitals. It occurs due to warm and humid conditions and is characterized by itchy red patches.
      ● Tinea Unguium: It occurs on nails which starts as spotted nails but in severe conditions can lead to a change in the shape of nails and discoloration.

      Causes of Fungal Infection

Weakened Immune System: Individuals with compromised immune systems, like those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy, are more susceptible to fungal infections.

Poor Hygiene: Inadequate personal hygiene practices can create environments conducive to fungal growth.

Warm and Humid Conditions: Fungi tend to thrive in warm, humid settings, making tropical and subtropical regions more susceptible.
