      What is Acne Vulgaris?

Acne vulgaris, often referred to simply as acne, is a common and chronic skin condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. It is an inflammatory condition that usually begins at adolescence and can remain or even start during adulthood in form of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and, in some cases, more severe forms like cysts or nodules. Acne typically occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the development of these lesions. Acne most commonly appears on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders, areas where the skin has a higher density of oil glands. While acne is especially prevalent among adolescents and young adults, it can affect individuals of all ages. The condition’s severity can vary, ranging from mild and occasional breakouts to more severe and persistent cases, which can lead to scarring and emotional distress. Acne is not only a dermatological concern but can also impact an individual’s self-esteem and overall quality of life.

      Causes of Acne Vulgaris

Excess Oil Production: The sebaceous glands in the skin can become overactive, leading to an excess production of oil (sebum). This excess oil can clog hair follicles and contribute to acne development. Oil production can be a major reason of clogging pores. As clogged pores have free fatty acid accumulation and hence is perfect place for infection development which results in inflammation and acne.
      ● Dead Skin Cells: Skin cells continuously shed and can sometimes block hair follicles. When these cells mix with excess sebum, they can form a plug.
Bacterial Overgrowth: The presence of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria on the skin can multiply within clogged hair follicles, causing inflammation and redness.
      ● Hormonal Fluctuations: Hormonal changes, such as those during adolescence, pregnancy, or the menstrual cycle, can stimulate sebaceous glands and lead to acne. In adolescence, hormonal surge usually gets combined bacterial growth on skin which results in acne.
Diet and Lifestyle: Certain dietary factors, such as a high glycemic diet or dairy consumption, may contribute to acne
      ● Pricking and rubbing of acne can trigger or increase the infection
      ● Stress- Stress and friction on the skin can also exacerbate the condition. It can also raise the level of hormones like cortisol which can lead to increase in acne.
      ● Medications like birth control pills (contain progestrone) and corticosteroid.
      ● Environmental conditions like high humid weather and air pollution.
      ● Genetics can also be one of the reasons

      Signs of Acne Vulgaris:

Blackheads: Often known as open comedones, appear as black raised spots on skin. These are clogged pores with dead skin or oil glands.
Whiteheads: Often known as closed comedones, appear as white bumps. They form underneath the skin with accumulation of dead skin cells and oil glands.
Papules: Small, raised, red or pink bumps on the skin. They are formed due to inflammation or infection in skin due to hair follicles.
Pustules: Similar to papules but contain pus at the centre, making them appear white or yellow with red outer rings. It can cause scarring if scratched or pricked.
Nodules: Larger, solid, painful lumps beneath the skin’s surface.
Cysts: Deep, pus-filled lumps that are often painful and can lead to scarring.
