      What are Acne Scars?

Acne scars, the lingering aftermath of persistent acne breakouts, are the result of the skin’s attempt to heal and repair itself after the inflammation caused by acne lesions. These scars can manifest in various forms, including depressed or raised areas on the skin, discoloration, or changes in skin texture. While acne scars are not harmful, they can significantly impact one’s self-esteem and confidence. Understanding the nature of acne scars is crucial in determining the most effective treatment approach for achieving smoother, healthier skin.

      Causes of Acne Scars

They are formed as a result of damaged tissue left after acne bumps settle down. Hence it is important to know the reasons for acne in order to prevent acne scars.

Inflammation Intensity: The severity of inflammation during acne episodes can influence the likelihood of scarring.
Delayed or Inadequate Treatment: Failing to address acne promptly or using improper methods may contribute to scarring.
Picking or Squeezing: Attempting to pop or squeeze pimples can lead to increased inflammation and scarring.
      ● Allergic reactions caused by dust or pollens can lead to acne and hence result in acne scars
      ● Diet plays a very important role. Food with a high glycemic index should be avoided, as it can increase sebum production and lead to inflammation.
      ● Hormonal changes in the body especially during puberty are the main reason for acne and thus acne scars
      ● Some medications can have adverse effects in the form of acne, redness, inflammation, and acne scars
      ● Application of wrong makeup and cosmetic products can also result in damaging of skin resulting in acne and acne scars

Types of Acne Scars and its Preventive Measures

      ● Atrophic Scars: Indentations or “pockmarks” on the skin. These pitted scars can be of different sizes and shapes and are widely characterized as box scars, rolling scars, and ice-pick scars.
      ● Hypertrophic scars: These are raised scars that are above the skin surface and majorly appear on the nose and chin.

      Preventive Measures:
Wash face with foaming face wash to unclog pores, remove dead skin cells, and follow and good basic skincare routine to keep skin healthy.
Follow a good diet and adequate hydration as what you eat reflects on your skin.
Always apply a sun protection layer whether indoors or outdoors.
Never pick up on your acne.
In case of breakout consult your doctor and follow the right medications to reduce the chances of scar formation.

Treatment for Acne Scars at Dr. Haror’s Wellness

Advanced Laser Therapies: Utilising cutting-edge fractionated laser technologies to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture. These lasers help by creating micro injuries resulting in collagen production and filling in the pits. Successive sessions are recommended. This treatment can have downtime in the form of scabbing for a few days.
Chemical Peels: Exfoliating the skin with chemical solutions to encourage new, smoother skin growth. This is done majorly for ice pick scars when they do not respond well to lasers or microneedling.
      ● Dermaroller or Dermapen: Microneedling devices help in collagen production. To enhance the efficacy of the treatment and boost collagen production growth promoters can also be incorporated as part of the treatment. This treatment works well for shallow scars and has almost minimal to no downtime.
Microneedling: Microneedling Radiofrequency is a procedure that works by stimulating collagen production through tiny, controlled skin punctures. The microneedles puncture the skin and stimulate its own healing system to start collagen production and RF degrades the collagen fibers to induce the body to build new collagen and elastin and help fill pits and reduce the depth of scars. This treatment has minimal to no downtime of slight redness for a few hours and successive sessions yield remarkable results.
