      What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by the development of brown or greyish-brown patches on the skin, typically on the face. These patches are usually symmetrical and can appear on the cheeks, forehead, chin, and upper lip, as well as other sun-exposed areas. Melasma is sometimes referred to as the “mask of pregnancy” because it often occurs in pregnant women due to hormonal changes, but it can affect individuals of all genders and backgrounds. This condition is generally harmless but can be a source of cosmetic concern. Melasma is associated with the overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, and is often triggered or worsened by sun exposure. Effective management and treatment of melasma often involve a combination of sun protection, skincare, and dermatological procedures to reduce the appearance of these pigmented patches and achieve a more even skin tone.

      Causes of Melasma

Though there is no clear reason of melasma, it can have multiple triggers. Some of them are:

Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during pregnancy, menopause, or with the use of hormonal contraceptives, can trigger melasma. The sensitivity to progestrone and estrogen is a common factor associated with it.
Sun Exposure: UV radiation from the sun stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin, exacerbating the appearance of melasma.
Genetics: A family history of melasma may increase one’s susceptibility to developing the condition.
Hormone-Related Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, can influence hormone levels and contribute to melasma.

Some medications like antiseizure pills, phototoxic drugs like antibiotics, retinoids, NSAID’s and diuretics can trigger it. Skincare products scented sopas and stress can be some contributing factors too.

      Signs of Melasma

Brown or greyish-brown patches on the face, often appearing on both sides symmetrically.

Common sites of occurrence include the cheeks, forehead, chin, upper lip, and sometimes the forearms.

Patches may vary in size and shape and tend to darken with sun exposure.

Melasma is typically a cosmetic concern rather than a painful or itchy condition.

More common in women, but men can also develop melasma.
