What is Lichen Planus Pigmentosus in Dermatology?

Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a chronic and inflammatory skin disorder that is primarily characterized by abnormal lesions along with itching/irritation on skin, nails, hair, and mucous membranes. This condition can develop over several weeks and looks like itchy, purplish, raised bumps. Inside mouth, it appears as lacy white patches, sometimes in the form of painful sores while in the genitals it can form bright red, itchy areas. On nails it can result in their thinning and splitting, sometimes ridge formation and nail loss can also happen. Understanding LPP’s causes, signs, and available treatments is essential for effective management and the preservation of hair and scalp health.

      Causes of
      Lichen Planus Pigmentosus(LPP)

Lichen Planus is considered to be a cell-mediated immune response, but its origin is still unknown and unpredictable. Some of the potential causes can be the following:
      ● Autoimmune Factors: LPP is believed to have an autoimmune basis, with the body’s immune system mistakenly attacking its own cells.
      ● Genetic Predisposition: A family history of LPP can increase the risk of developing the condition.
      ● Certain medications such as drugs that are used to treat heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes.
      ● Allergens include chemicals like arsenic, gold, diuretics, iodide compounds, antibiotics, and certain kinds of dyes.
      ● Flu vaccine
      ● Pain medications
      ● Stress etc.

      Signs of
      Lichen Planus Pigmentosus(LPP)

Signs depend on the body part that is getting affected by the same. Symptoms include:
      ● Purple, shiny, flat bumps often form on the skin
      ● Lines of rashes where skin has been scratched
      ● Inside the mouth lacy white patches on the tongue or inside of the cheeks
      ● Itchiness
      ● Painful sores can develop in the mouth or genitals
      ● Hair loss can also happen rarely
      ● Nail scarring or loss.
