What is Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen Effluvium is a type of hair loss characterised by excessive shedding of hair in the telogen (resting) phase of the hair growth cycle. This condition disrupts the normal cycle, causing a larger-than-usual number of hair follicles to enter the telogen phase simultaneously, leading to noticeable hair thinning and shedding. Unlike other forms of hair loss, Telogen Effluvium is often temporary, with hair regrowth typically occurring once the underlying cause is addressed.

Causes
Causes of Telogen Effluvium

Physical or Emotional Stress: High stress levels, whether due to illness, surgery, or emotional trauma, can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to excessive shedding.

Medical Conditions: Chronic illnesses such as thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, and autoimmune diseases can contribute to Telogen Effluvium.

Dietary Deficiencies: Inadequate nutrition, particularly deficiencies in iron, zinc, and biotin, may impact hair health and contribute to increased shedding. FAD Diets that do not contain enough proteins.

Medications: Certain medications, such as anticoagulants, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, and retinoids, may have hair loss as a side effect, triggering Telogen Effluvium.

Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, such as those occurring during pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause, can influence the hair growth cycle.
