What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a skin condition characterised by the loss of pigment, resulting in white patches on the skin. It occurs when the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, are damaged or stops functioning. Vitiligo can affect any part of the body, and its exact cause is still not fully understood. Vitiligo affects people with all skin type, but it may be more noticeable in people with brown or black skin. This is not at all a life threatening or contagious skin concern.

Causes
Causes of Vitiligo

Autoimmune Response: The body’s immune system may mistakenly attack and destroy melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin.

Genetic Factors: A family history of vitiligo can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.

A trigger event such a stress, severe sunburn or skin trauma like contact with chemical.

Signs of Vitiligo

White Patches: The most noticeable sign is the presence of depigmented, white patches on the skin. Patchy loss of skin color, which usually first appears on the hands, face and areas around body openings and genitals.

Premature whitening or graying of the hair on your scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard.

Loss of color in the tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose (mucous membranes)

Signs
Types of Vitiligo

Vitiligo can start at any age, but usually appears before the age of 30. Depending on the type of vitiligo it may affect:

  • Nearly all skin surfaces- universal vitiligo: the discoloration affects nearly all the skin surfaces.
  • Generalized Vitiligo– Most common one, the discolored patches often progress similarly on corresponding body areas symmetrically.
  • Segmental Vitiligo– Appears only on one side or part of the body. It occurs at a younger age, progress for a year or two and then stop.
  • Focal Vitiligo– This occurs on one or only a few areas of body.
  • Acrofacial Vitiligo– This appears on the face and hands. The affected skin is on the face, hand and around body openings such as eyes, nose and ears.

It is difficult to predict how this disease will progress, sometimes the patches stop forming without treatment. In most cases pigment loss spreads and eventually involves most of the skin. Occasionally the skin gets its color back.
