      What is Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra?

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra, often referred to as DPN, is a benign skin condition characterised by the development of small, dark papules on the face and neck. While these growths are generally harmless and not associated with any underlying health concerns, they can be a source of cosmetic discomfort for individuals affected by them. Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra is particularly common among people with darker skin tones and tends to manifest gradually over time. The papules are typically painless, with a smooth surface and a range of colours from brown to black. Understanding the nature of Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra is essential for those seeking solutions to manage or remove these papules and regain confidence in their skin’s appearance.

DPN is neither contagious nor cancerous. This condition can be little irritating and at times itchy, but usually asymptomatic.

      Causes of
      Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

Genetic Predisposition: Individuals with a family history of DPN are more likely to develop these skin growths.
      ● H
ormonal Factors: Fluctuations in hormones, such as those occurring during pregnancy, may contribute to the development of DPN.
UV Exposure: Prolonged sun exposure without proper protection may play a role in the formation of these pigmented papules.

      Signs of
      Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

Small, Raised Papules: Dark or black in colour, these papules are typically small in size.
Smooth Surface: Unlike warts or moles, DPN growths usually have a smooth texture.
Common on Face and Neck: Predominantly found on the face and neck, particularly around the eyes and cheekbones.

Treatment for Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra at Dr. Haror’s Wellness

Cryotherapy: Using extreme cold to freeze and remove the papules.
      ● Electrocautery: Employing high-frequency electrical currents which convert to heat energy to target these cells dry them up and they fall off. It is used to safely eliminate the growth by damaging only pigment cells in normal skin.
      ● Laser Therapy: Targeting the pigmented lesions with precision for a smoother complexion. Lasers use different frequencies of a concentrated beam of light to reduce the appearance of DPN. These lasers coagulate melanin in dark spots and blood supply to growth which then creates scabs to form and fall off in few days.
      ● Topical Treatments: Customised creams or solutions to manage and reduce the appearance of DPN.
